Topic: The Economics and Business of Multisided Platforms Abstract: Multisided platforms are one of the most profitable business constructs in the digital economy. Some of the largest digital companies in the world—including Facebook, Amazon, and Apple—exploit the multisided platform as a part of their business model. Multisided platforms operate in a highly diverse ecosystem and oversee interactions between heterogenous actors with different business motivations. Fundamental insights into multisided platforms are necessary to understand today's digital business landscape. This talk provides an overview of the various types of multisided platforms from a network effect perspective. We identify seven types of multisided platforms and give examples of digital services for each group. Analytical models developed provide new insights into how the various multisided platforms operate.
