Speech Title: Effective Scaling of Blockchain Beyond Consensus Innovations Abstract: As an emerging technique, blockchain exhibits great potential in various fields, e.g., Internet of Things, 5G, Artificial Intelligence, etc. However, a long-standing issue that hinders the applications of blockchain is the low performance and scalability caused by distributed consensus mechanism and operating methods. In this talk, we provide an in-depth understanding of blockchain system from performance perspective. Specifically, we first introduce the basic concepts of blockchain technique, as well as its state-of-art development. Then, we conduct a comprehensive benchmarking for analyzing the throughput, latency, and scalability of the mainstream blockchain. Our benchmarking clearly shows the tendency of blockchain optimization in the past decade. To acquire deeper knowledge of blockchain, we present two systemic analyzing tools within fine-grained performance metrics, i.e., Prism and BCmaster, and compare the efficiency and security of different blockchain designs. Finally, based on the received observations, we propose several work for optimizing blockchain, including high-performance blockchain systems. A short introduction to Dr. Kun Wang: Kun Wang received two Ph.D. degrees from Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications, China in 2009 and from the University of Aizu, Japan in 2018, respectively, both in Computer Science. He was a Postdoc Fellow in UCLA, USA from 2013 to 2015, where he is a Senior Research Professor. Dr. Wang has co-authored more than 200 research papers, with over 7500 citations and an H-index of 46, according to Google scholar citations. He is the recipient of 9 Best Paper Award/Nomination, including ACM FPGA 2020, ACM CHI 2020, ACM MobiSys 2020, ACM SenSys 2019, etc. He is also the recipient of IEEE TCGCC Outstanding Young Researcher Award 2021.
