Speech Title: Industrial robots in new applications: chances and challenges Abstract: Industrial robots have been widely used in many industries, such as automotive, electronics, and so on, in the past decades. With the automatic and digital wave, there are increasing needs of industrial robots to be used in many new and higher demanded applications. In this opening speech, after a brief looking-back of the industrial robots history and current status, recent development of the industrial robots are shared. The leveraging of edge-cutting technologies in sensing, machine learning, gripping enables the industrial robots for new high demanded applications. But it is not the end of the story. Further understanding and development are needed for the remaining challenges. Bio: Dr. Jiafan Zhang received the B.S degree in mechanical engineering and automation from Shanghai Jiaotong University in 2003 and Ph.D degree in mechanical engineering and automation from Zhejiang University in 2009. After that, he joined ABB China Robotic R&D Center, with extensive experience in world-class product development. He is currently the research team manager with ABB Robotics and Discrete Automation. His main research interest includes fundamental and enabler technology for industrial robot design, reliability, and new applications.
